I have a new release, Big Bang, from Diez Tragos. This is definitely not blues but a really smokin' release. It has mixes of many styles of music which makers it difficult to describe. It opens with Dueno de mis suenos which is a very cool complex rhythmatic track with atmospheric guitar and vocals over a strong driven beat. If you know Mars Volta (or King Crimson for the earlier generation )this would be the closest comparison that I could make. I like both bands so this is a really good start. Soy Inmortal is up next with a solid single direction but still complex musical pattern. This isn't Lady Gaga! This is serious stuff. It draws comparison to some metal due to some of the vocals and over driven guitars but again to me it's about the musicality and this is really cool. No soy un angel, a much quieter track overall uses the dynamic range to create sonic impact. This track again has tastes of metal but all of the complexity of an orchestra and actually some of the characteristics of later Led Zeppelin. Sufrir has a rock track intro but definitely sounds like it is Adrian Belew influenced and these guys get the metal scream down on this track. Crucificame is another track that starts off quite quiet and builds into a rhythmic frenzy. Again I hear references to Led Zep but in a totally different direction. Like multiple bands have been torn apart and put back together in a creative way that works quite well. Descifrar los signos is a straight up rock grinder built on a classic blues boogie but then over driven with distorted vocals. Ver llorer desiertos is another different track with what sounds like a tabla and then the complexity and dynamics of Volta/Fripp/Crimson/Gunn. If you like these bands you must check this out! La eternidad opens with drumming on what sounds like oil drums and then a very cool guitar riff (not unlike Jeff Beck) but then takes it's own turn. This track has a very strong bottom and again, I really like it. Quien es quien is an uptempo rocker driven by guitar into another staggered tempo track. This track has a cool Frippertronics style guitar solo on it and again a solid refrain. The release is wrapped by Franco Is Dead. Another off kilter track with street noise, disjointed loudspeaker announcements and crowd it is a very solid completion to a very different and cool release.
If you have an open mind and like something different, you must check this out!
She was already singing, playing Wurlitzer and making beats, but because recording was new territory, jenn’s songs saw numerous incarnations. She also began playing bass and electric guitar on her tracks and started experimenting with found-sound samples and vocal layering. With nods to Lykke Li and Imogen Heap, the result is an acoustic-ish, electro-ish labour of love that highlights her sweetly sexy voice.

Staunchly DIY, jenn counteracts her hours in the digital world by making her artwork the analog way: knitting, string art and yes, even her version of macaroni art. But for this album, she took the approach one step further by rug-hooking a 14,400 stitch self-portrait, while recording a time-lapse video of the process. The digital version of the artwork is remarkable, but the physical CD – which replicates the entire rug, front to back and side to side – is a mini marvel!

Crafting aside, jenn’s hard work has not gone unnoticed. In 2010, her song HUM was the AmazonMP3.com Free Song of the Day, and the Hollis P Monroe remix of the song was featured on URB.com and later released on the UK label, Defected Records. This year, jenn has been stacking up co-writing collaborations with various labels, including Brooklyn/Montreal's Galactique Recordings, Montreal's The Villa, and with Ruoho Ruotsi of San Francisco’s De’fchild Recordings.

Matching the digital-analog juxtaposition of her recorded work, jenn’s live show blends the vintage warmth of her Wurlitzer with live looping, beatboxing and beatmaking on her MPC2000 sampler – while singing, of course. She is also sometimes joined by a viola. While doing numerous shows in Montreal, including POP Montreal, she’s also brought her music to Toronto, including NXNE and Indie Music Week, as well as to Winnipeg and Southern Ontario.

Having emerged from her cocoon of self-production, the years of going it alone have paid off in a gorgeous way with the icy, versatile, electronic-influenced pop found throughout her release, HUSH.
If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! But how to make my dream a reality ? I thought, the best way to do this would be to start a band. We called ourselves "Jack Feels Fine" we practiced; we played; we toured; we made a record; we toured some more; then we broke up. I built a recording studio and recorded other bands for awhile. I recorded "Bystander" a studio project and started "The Capital Punishment Corporation" an internet record company. "The Askmasters" were looking for a bass player and asked me to join. Once again, we practiced; we played; we recorded an album; then we broke up. In the summer of 2002 "Bystander" went to play the NXNE music festival in Toronto, but by the summer of 2003 "Bystander" had broken up (and I was the only member) Now I am called "The Kettle Black" and I own the dot com to prove it. I finished my first recording 2004 and I'm playing shows again. I play acoustic and electric guitars, bass and synth/piano, I use samples, a couple of loop stations and a drum machine. Someone said it sounded like Mr.Wrong and Neil Young jamming with Roland (formerly of Big Black) in Roger Waters living room. I don't know but it sure is nice to be back on the road selling my T-shirts again.
If you like what I’m doing, Like ---Bman’s Blues Report--- Facebook Page! There's more than a fashion statement in the comparison to America's greatest country singer, too, for Ochoa is a "guajiro" (from the countryside) and a champion of rural Cuban styles such as son and guararcha.

One of the younger members of the Buena Vista Social Club, he has since become something of an elder statesman himself and has been a professional musician for almost half a century. For many years he was a regular at Santiago's famous Casa de la Trova, and, in 1978, he took over the leadership of Cuarteto Patria, a Cuban institution, which, by then, had already been performing for almost 40 years. He recorded two albums with the group for the Mexican Corason label and in 1986 met the veteran singer Compay Segundo, who joined Cuarteto Patria for a time. While with the group Segundo recorded the album Chanchaneando, which featured the original version of "Chan Chan."

A decade after their first meeting, Ochoa and Segundo famously reunited to perform the song as the opening track on the Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social Club. To that album Eliades also contributed lead vocals on "El Cuarto de Tula" and his own guajira showcase on "El Carretero." Since Buena Vista, he has recorded several fine albums under his own name, including Cubafrica (1998) with the great Cameroonian saxophonist Manu Dibango, Sublime Ilusión (1999), Tributo a Cuarteto Patria (2000), and Estoy Como Nunca (2002). He continues to lead Grupo Patria and tours regularly around the world.

---

TOUMANI DIABATÉ kora (born Bamako, Mali, 1965)
One of the most significant musicians in Africa, Toumani Diabaté is the leading exponent of the West African harp known as the kora. Born in Bamako, he inherited his musical gifts from a long family lineage of kora masters. A child prodigy, he recorded his debut album, Kaira, in London in 1986, at the age of 21. With his playing bass, rhythm, and solo simultaneously on the instrument's 21 strings, Kaira was the first ever album of solo kora music and the start of a remarkable international career.

As an innovative and experimental collaborator, Diabaté recorded the two acclaimed Songhai fusion albums with the Spanish flamenco group Ketama and has worked with Damon Albarn, Björk, and the London Symphony Orchestra. His collaboration with Taj Mahal on 1999's Kulanjan explored the connections between West African music and the blues and was cited by Barack Obama as his favorite album during the 2008 Presidential election campaign.

In the more traditional vein, Diabaté has recorded widely with most of the greatest names in Malian music, both on his own albums and as a guest on releases by singers such as Salif Keita and Kasse Mady Diabaté. In recent years, he has recorded a series of thrillingly diverse releases for World Circuit/Nonesuch, including two albums of kora-guitar duets with Ali Farka Touré, including the Grammy-winning In the Heart of the Moon (2004), Boulevard de l'Indépendance (2005) with his groundbreaking Symmetric Orchestra, and the acoustic solo kora collection The Mandé Variations (2008).

---

BASSEKOU KOUYATE ngoni (born Garana, Mali, 1966)
Descended from a long line of griots, Bassekou Kouyate was born in the Segu region of Mali, where his mother was a famous singer and his father was a celebrated player of the ngoni ba (banjo-like lute) on the local wedding party circuit. At the age of 16, Bassekou took his father's place, and by the end of the 1980s he had joined Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra.

Since then, Kouyate has revolutionized the playing of the ngoni, adding extra strings to give him a wider melodic range and inventing new plucking methods to allow faster runs and more versatility. He also became the first ngoni player to use the instrument like a guitar, performing on his feet, instead of in the traditional seated position. As an accompanist, he went on to record with a wide variety of performers, including Taj Mahal and Ali Farka Touré, before forming the ngoni quartet Ngoni Ba and making his debut as a band leader on Segu Blue, which won the 2007 BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music as Best Album. He followed it in 2009 with a second album, I Speak Fula.

---

KASSÉ MADY DIABATÉ vocals (born Kangaba, Mali, 1949)
The veteran griot singer Kasse Mady Diabaté began performing with the Super Mandé orchestra in his early 20s. He went on to become lead vocalist with Las Maravillas de Mali (later known as National Badema du Mali), a band famous for reworking traditional Mandé songs into a Cuban dance-band format. He recorded his debut solo album, Fode, in Paris, in 1989. An electric, dance-based recording produced by Ibrahima Sylla, Fode was followed a year later with a contrasting album of acoustic griot songs, Kela Tradition (1990). Kasse Mady Diabaté also sang on the fusion album Songhai 2 (1995) with Ketama and Toumani Diabaté.

After a decade in Paris, he returned to Mali in 1998 and joined Taj Mahal, Toumani Diabaté, and Bassekou Kouyate on the recording of Kulanjan and became lead vocalist with Toumani's Symmetric Orchestra on the 2006 album Boulevard de l'Indépendance. AfroCubism is not the first time he has worked with Cuban musicians, for the late Buena Vista Social Club star Cachaíto López guested on his 2003 solo album, Kassi Kasse. His solo album Manden Djeli Kan appeared in 2009.

---

DJELIMADY TOUNKARA guitars, (born Kita, Mali, in 1947)
Arguably the finest guitarist in Africa, Djelimady Tounkara was born Kita and grew up playing drums and the xalam (lute). His parents wanted him to become an Islamic cleric but the plan was abandoned as soon as he saw and heard his first guitar. After early success playing in the Kita regional band, by the mid-1960s he had moved to Bamako, where he joined Misra Jazz, before he was promoted to join the state-sponsored Orchestre National as rhythm guitarist.

After the orchestra was disbanded, Tounkara joined the now legendary Rail Band on its formation in 1970, playing at the Buffet Hotel de la Gare, next to Bamako's train station, in a line up that included the singers Salif Keita and Mory Kante. He remained the Rail Band's arranger and lead guitarist throughout its glory years and in its later revival as the Super Rail Band, and continues to perform with them in Bamako to this day. In addition to appearing on all the Rail Band's recordings, he has also released the solo acoustic albums Sigui (2001) and Solon Kono (2006), as well as Big String Theory (2002) with his trio Bajourou.

---

FODE LASSANA DIABATÉ balafon (born Conakry, Guinea, 1971)
Born in Guinea into a family of virtuoso balafon players, Lassana Diabaté moved as a young man to Bamako in the early 1990s. He has since become fêted as Mali's most gifted player of the 22-key xylophone of the Mandé griots, appearing on albums by Salif Keita, Bassekou Kouyate, and Kasse Mady Diabaté, among others, and has been a long-standing member of Toumani Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra. This is a recent piece from Jan Akkerman, famed Dutch guitarist of Focus renown. Akkerman left Focus years ago and developed a more continental style over a number of releases. I think that this is terrific. Is it the blues. Doesn't sound like Robert Johnson but neither does Muddy Waters. I like it.
Is this blues?

Hope Sandoval (born June 24, 1966) is an American singer-songwriter who is the lead singer for Mazzy Star and Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions.

Sandoval has toured and collaborated with other artists, including vocals on Massive Attack's "Paradise Circus" (2010).

During live performances, Sandoval prefers to sing in near-darkness with only a dim backlight, playing the tambourine, harmonica, glockenspiel or shaker. She is reputed to have a shy personality, and rarely interacts with the audience.

Meshell Ndegeocello (born Michelle Lynn Johnson, August 29, 1968) is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, bassist, and vocalist. Her music incorporates a wide variety of influences, including funk, soul, hip hop, reggae, R&B, rock, and jazz. She has received significant critical acclaim throughout her career, and has had ten career Grammy Award nominations. She has been credited for having "sparked the neo-soul movement."

Ndegeocello was born Michelle Lynn Johnson in Berlin, Germany, to army lieutenant and saxophonist father Jacques Johnson and health care worker mother Helen. She was raised in Washington, D.C. where she attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Oxon Hill High School. In early press releases from Maverick Records her birth year was erroneously listed as 1969. The 1968 birth date has been confirmed through a previous manager and lifelong friend.[citation needed]

Named Michelle Lynn Johnson at birth, Ndegeocello has had numerous name changes. She adopted the surname Ndegeocello, which means "free like a bird" in Swahili. Meshell Ndegeocello is pronounced Mee-shell N-deh-gay-o-chel-o. Early pressings of Plantation Lullabies were stickered with the instructions. She has changed the spelling of this name a number of times during her career; however, the correct spelling of her stage name is now Meshell Ndegeocello.
Although threads of blues run throughout I'd more describe this as a progressive rock release.I try to stay away from music that travels too far from the blues but with featured artists such as Steve Lukather (Toto and record producer working with Jeff Beck), Tony MacAlpine (Planet X), Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Joe Bonamassa ( JB Band and Black Country Communion), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), former Jeff Beck drummer Simon Phillips it's hard not to give it a listen. You won't find any Hooker or King licks in there but you may find it quite enjoyable.

I do.

Derek Sherinian (born August 25, 1966) is a rock keyboardist who has toured and recorded for Alice Cooper, Billy Idol, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kiss, and Alice In Chains.[1] He was also a member of Dream Theater and is the founder of the instrumental metal-fusion band Planet X. His solo albums feature several prominent artists, including Slash, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Lukather, John Sykes, Billy Sheehan, Zakk Wylde and Al Di Meola. Sherinian is a founding member of the supergroup Black Country Communion.

Sherinian has distiguished himself by his aggressive "guitaristic" approach to his keyboard style. He has been called the "King of the Keys" by Guitar World magazine and the "Caligula of Keyboards" by Alice Cooper. His influences include Elton John, Keith Emerson, Jan Hammer, and a variety of guitarists. He is an American of Greek-Armenian descent and has a special interest in Armenian history.
Social Distortion is an American punk rock band formed in 1978 in Fullerton, California. The band currently consists of Mike Ness (vocals, guitars), Jonny Wickersham (guitars), Brent Harding (bass) and David Hidalgo, Jr. (drums).

Social Distortion temporarily disbanded in 1985, due to frontman Ness' drug addiction and troubles with the law, which resulted in extended stints in various rehabilitation centers, that lasted for two years. However, the band reformed around 1986 and have continued being active today, even after the death of longtime guitarist Dennis Danell, who succumbed to a brain aneurysm in 2000. Since its inception the band lineup has been a virtual revolving-door of talent, with many members coming and going – Ness has been the only constant member.

To date, Social Distortion has released seven full-length studio albums, two compilations, one live album and two DVDs. The band released its debut album Mommy's Little Monster in 1983, which was very popular in the United States. Social Distortion did not release a second album, Prison Bound, until 1988. That album attracted the attention of Epic Records, who signed the band in 1989 and issued their highly successful self-titled third album a year later, which peaked at number 128 on the U.S. Billboard 200, and featured their well-known hit singles "Ball and Chain", "Story of My Life" and the cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire." The next three albums, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, White Light, White Heat, White Trash, Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll and the Greatest Hits compilation (which spawned the previously unreleased hit "Far Behind") were also well-received. Their most recent studio album is 2011's Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, which entered the Billboard 200 at #4, marking their highest entry on that chart. According to Ness, there is talk of an eighth studio album, which will likely be released in 2013.
Todd Harry Rundgren (born June 22, 1948) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and record producer. Hailed in the early stage of his career as a new pop-wunderkind, supported by the certified gold solo double LP Something/Anything? in 1972, Todd Rundgren's career has produced a diverse range of recordings as solo artist, and during the seventies and eighties with the band Utopia. He has also been prolific as a producer and engineer on the recorded work of other musicians.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Rundgren engineered and/or produced many notable albums for other acts, including Straight Up by Badfinger, Stage Fright by The Band, We're an American Band by Grand Funk Railroad, Bat Out of Hell by Meat Loaf (now ranked as the fifth biggest-selling album of all time), and Skylarking by XTC. In the 1980s and 1990s his interest in video and computers led to Rundgren's "Time Heals" being the eighth video played on MTV, and "Change Myself" was generated on commercially available Amiga Computers.

His best-known songs include "Hello It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" which have heavy rotation on classic rock radio stations, and "Bang the Drum All Day" featured in many sports arenas, commercials, and movie trailers.
I stumbled onto this guy and thought it was worth a listen. Check this out and see what you think.
Many may have seen him, but even more will have heard him. The sympathetic German is a sought after cat in the German and international music scene for quite some years. 1997 he was awarded "best german Rock-Pop guitarist, in 2004, the 50th birthday of the Stratocaster, as the final winner of an europewide competition he was called "Stratking of Europe". He is resposible for some jingles (f.e. the top german sports show "Das Aktuelle Sportstudio" (ZDF), film- and serial-stoundtracks ( "Die Oase" (The oasis), a big city eco-thriller, "Hart an der Grenze" (On the edge), both by ARD). He as well played with international greats like Stewart Copeland, Don Airey, Mel Gaynor, Percy Sledge, Bobby Kimball or Hazel O' Connor, German acts like Purple Schulz, actor/singer Uwe Ochsenknecht, the Rainbirds, Bastiaan Ragas, No Angels, Planet Claire or Tic Tac Toe. On their sucessful tours Thomas had the possibility to play his guitar to a younger but surprisingly enthusiastic audience.
Thomas released 3 Studio CDs: "The Beauty of Simplicity", "Electric Gallery" and "21st century guitar" - poppy catchy melodies meet here the typical rounchy, bluesy rocking sound of his Stratocaster.
In 2002 introduced the Thomas Blug band with some of europe’s finest instrumentalists with dutch legend Thijs van Leer (also known as bandleader in Focus) on B3 Organ and flute, Raoul Walton on bass, and Wolf Simon on drums. To be seen on his fourth masterpiece "Thomas Blug band live in Holland" available on DVD and CD. 2009 the Thomas Blug Band released the brandnew CD "Soul & Pepper.
The band works together with "blind faith" since they work together for so many years. Raoul’s funky fingers meet Wolf’s elegant drumming - together they create grooves and atmospheres that take you away. Legendary Thijs van Leer contributes a lot of unheared colours and deep soul to the unique sound of this band with his organ, flute and vocal performances.

But when Thomas "sings" with his guitar, he touches your heart and soul like no other. Some people discribed his style as a "rounchy Jeff Beck preaching with the warmth of Santana in a spacy world of Pink Floyd".
Ok...here's a few to stretch your thinking. What makes up a blues song. Is it guys in ties... how but a Son House tie.... is it the soloist on tele.... is it someone singing with the howl of Robert Johnson... is it emotion? (these guys do wear Son House ties). Do they use Hiwatt amps...you betcha!

I seem to remember the British taking the original delta blues and bringing it back to America in a new form so we could hear it...
King Crimson? Blues? Remove the name of the band, have Stevie Ray play it in concert and it's taken in totally different context. I have an open mind. Who else does. Son House says the blues got no jumpin'. I know the blues got slide guitar...
You know the blues manifests itself where we'd never think to look. Courtney Love has the blues.

Hole is an American alternative rock band that originally formed in Los Angeles in 1989. The band is fronted by vocalist/songwriter and rhythm guitarist Courtney Love, who co-founded Hole with former songwriter/lead guitarist Eric Erlandson. Hole achieved considerable commercial and critical success throughout the 1990s.

The band made a splash in the underground rock scene in 1991 with their debut album, Pretty on the Inside, which was musically and lyrically abrasive, noted for its predominant punk and noise rock influence. Their second studio album, Live Through This (1994), which featured a more streamlined and grunge-oriented sound, received vast critical accolades upon release and has been regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time, as well as the group's most notable work.

As the band progressed into the later 1990s, they incorporated elements of pop rock into their sound; the band's third album, Celebrity Skin (1998), fused hard rock with various pop elements, contrasting to their rougher punk rock-oriented past. Celebrity Skin went on to be the band's most commercially successful album, garnering them immense critical attention as well as several Grammy nominations.

In 2009, seven years after disbanding in 2002, Love announced she was reforming Hole with former Larrikin Love guitarist Micko Larkin. Erlandson, however, stated that no reunion could take place contractually without mutual involvement between Love and Erlandson. On January 1, 2010, a website promoting Hole's latest release, Nobody's Daughter, was launched, with links to various social media pages including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and MySpace. The album was released on April 27, 2010.
Is this Blues?

Frank Vincent Zappa (play /ˈzæpə/; December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, singer-songwriter, electric guitarist, record producer, and film director. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, electronic, orchestral, and musique concrète works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band The Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist.

While in his teens, he acquired a taste for percussion-based avant-garde composers such as Edgard Varèse and 1950s rhythm and blues music. He began writing classical music in high school, while at the same time playing drums in rhythm and blues bands—he later switched to electric guitar. He was a self-taught composer and performer, and his diverse musical influences led him to create music that was often impossible to categorize. His 1966 debut album with the Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, combined songs in conventional rock and roll format with collective improvisations and studio-generated sound collages. His later albums shared this eclectic and experimental approach, irrespective of whether the fundamental format was one of rock, jazz or classical. He wrote the lyrics to all his songs, which—often humorously—reflected his iconoclastic view of established social and political processes, structures and movements. He was a strident critic of mainstream education and organized religion, and a forthright and passionate advocate for freedom of speech, self-education, political participation and the abolition of censorship.

Zappa was a highly productive and prolific artist and gained widespread critical acclaim. Many of his albums are considered essential in rock and jazz history. He is regarded as one of the most original guitarists and composers of his time. He also remains a major influence on musicians and composers. He had some commercial success, particularly in Europe, and for most of his career was able to work as an independent artist. Zappa was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

Zappa was married to Kathryn J. "Kay" Sherman from 1960 to 1964. In 1967, he married Adelaide Gail Sloatman, with whom he remained until his death from prostate cancer in 1993. They had four children: Moon Unit, Dweezil, Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. Gail Zappa manages the businesses of her late husband under the name the Zappa Family Trust.
